Green waste: bin, dump, or crew?
Grass, branches, dirt and concrete are all "yard stuff" until you try to throw them away. They follow different rules, and mixing them up gets expensive. Here is the breakdown.
What the green bin takes
City and county providers generally accept grass clippings, leaves, weeds, small branches and brush cut to a set length and bundled or loose in the container. Two limits matter most: branch thickness (often around four inches) and container weight. An overloaded bin can be left behind, which is why big cleanups rarely fit in bins at all.
For City of LA residents, the green bin and 311 are the first stop for questions about yard trimmings. Contract cities and unincorporated areas have their own provider rules; a five-minute call to your provider saves a wasted haul. If your city offers seasonal leaf-and-limb collection after storms, use it before paying anyone.
What never goes in the green bin
- Dirt, soil, rock or sand. Heavy inert material damages and overloads collection trucks.
- Concrete, brick, asphalt and pavers.
- Sod with soil attached (usually treated as dirt, not trimmings).
- Palm fronds in many areas: stringy, hard to compost, and often rejected.
- Treated lumber, patio furniture, planters, anything built rather than grown.
Where dirt, concrete and sod actually go
Inert material goes to aggregate and recycling facilities, and some landfills in the county accept clean fill and concrete. Loads are weighed and charged by the ton, minimums apply, and a truck bed of wet dirt weighs far more than it looks. That tonnage, plus the tarping, the driving and the dump line, is exactly what a hauling crew is pricing when it quotes a dirt or concrete job.
How to decide
One weekend of trimming that fits in the bin: bin. A tree removal with a stump and a brush pile: green bin for what fits, crew for the rest. A backyard excavation of dirt or a demolished patio: crew, always. Trying to sneak inert material into a green bin risks a left-behind bin and a provider flag. Our lawn care price ranges cover regular maintenance, and our junk removal ranges cover the big cleanups; both are listed per city with quotes confirmed before loading.
